Weekly Punt: Week 5

I’ve always like to have a dabble in sporting bets. I rate my knowledge right up there with the best in the business when it comes to AFL so I figured why not put it to the test, put my money where my mouth is and make a tidy profit. One third through the football season I came up with a challenge…….
To turn $100 into $1000 by seasons end using minimal risk.
The theory seemed very achievable on paper, each week I would only need to get the odds of 1.20 per $1 placed. The initial bet would only make $20 but by compounding the bet each week by seasons end it will total $1069. With the form of Geelong and Saint Kilda, its been a pretty smooth ride during the first four weeks. The only danger was Freo pushing the cats right to the least 5 minutes of the contest last week.
So this week I’m going to jump off the Geelong train. They seem to be getting quite complacent and I never like to bet against a South Australian team, this week being the power. Port were the last team to beat Geelong at Kadina so I wouldn’t put the mission beyond them, especially after the baking they’ve copped in the media this fortnight. If they don’t respond with some fight this week they are just about gone for the year.
Saint Kilda playing a refreshed, rejuvenate Richmond is a bit of a danger bet too. I fancy Richmond as a solid team with a lot of talent there. Sure they’ve had a shocking year to date, but now with the shackles released I think they are more then capable of turning it on sooner or later, so i’ll stay away from this match. The game being played in Melbourne kills any advantage for the home team as well.
Collingwood are my sure thing this week. They’ve been on fire of late. A massive turning point has been the return of Alan Didak. He is vital to that Collingwood midfield engine, such a dangerous leg on him and always drifts forward for a few shots on goal for game. Inevitably those shots result in goals! The Pies seem to be hitting their straps for a big tilt at September. Freo on the other hand, well they have been a basket case at the best of times, let alone away from WA. Too many first year players that will be over awed at playing at the “G” in front of 50,000+ vocal crowd!
However, the Collingwood match only gives me a return of 1.13. I’ll need to chuck in another bet to get to our 1.20+ figure. What I like to do for a multiplier boost is check out who’s playing the Demons! Seems they have to travel to Brisbane to take on the Lions. I can’t see Vossy’s boys having much trouble here. Brisbane outright win is giving 1.09 which is enough!
Teams backed: Collingwood (1.13) + Brisbane (1.09)
Bet placed: $219.00
